A learning disorder, also known as a specific learning disorder, is a neurological condition that affects an individual's ability to acquire and use specific academic skills, despite adequate intelligence, motivation, and educational opportunities. Learning disorders are characterized by significant difficulties in specific areas of learning, such as reading, writing, mathematics, or other academic skills. These difficulties are not attributed to factors like intellectual disabilities, lack of effort, or inadequate instruction.

Key features of learning disorders include:

  • Specific Areas of Difficulty: Learning disorders are specific to particular academic skills or domains. For example, a person may have a learning disorder in reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or math (dyscalculia).

  • Consistency and Persistence: Learning disorders persist over time and are consistent across different situations. These difficulties often become evident during a person's school years when academic demands increase.

  • Impact on Academic Performance: Learning disorders can significantly affect an individual's academic performance, leading to difficulties in completing assignments, taking tests, and meeting grade-level expectations.

  • Average or Above Average Intelligence: People with learning disorders typically have average or above-average intelligence. The challenges they face are specific to certain areas of learning, rather than reflecting overall cognitive abilities.

Types of Learning Disorders:

  • Dyslexia: Affects reading skills, leading to difficulties in recognizing and decoding words, spelling, and reading fluency.

  • Dysgraphia: Impairs writing skills, resulting in challenges with handwriting, spelling, and organizing thoughts on paper.

  • Dyscalculia: Impairs mathematical abilities, causing difficulties with understanding and manipulating numbers, as well as solving math-related problems.

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback or brainwave training, is a non-invasive therapeutic approach that aims to help individuals regulate and optimize their brain activity. Neurofeedback involves monitoring and providing real-time feedback about an individual's brainwave patterns, allowing them to learn how to self-regulate their brain activity and improve cognitive functioning.
